English Language Support After School Class
At Wahluke School District, 51.7% of our student population is considered English Language Learners. English is a very complex language, and for many of our students, English is not their primary language. For others, this is the first year that they are learning this new language.
Through the Bilingual program and with the help of Rachelle Lopez and Maria Gonzalez, Mattawa Elementary paraprofessionals, and Julio Maldonado, the district Kindergarten through 6th grade EL Advocate, our emerging and newcomer students can attend an afterschool class to get additional English language support.
The English language support after school class is an environment where emerging and newcomer students feel confident and comfortable practicing new vocabulary and working on their pronunciation, along with receiving support with any homework they may have. There are different activities the students get to do, such as flashcards with sight word and question and conversation practice with peers and educators.
Apart from these activities, the educators have helped these students get tools that they can use outside of the classroom with the help of the Mattawa Public Library. With a library card, students can check out books to expand their vocabulary and use the online resources the public library offers, such as Rosetta Stone.
“Parents agree to the lessons and are supportive; the students also enjoy and are happy to be there. They all get along with each other and are feeling more comfortable learning a new language,” says Maldonado. He mentioned that he sees a lot of himself in the students as he was once in their shoes.
The first session of the English language support class or “las clases de inglés,” as Maldonado says his students call it, was in January 2020. Thirty students attended the first session, the second session starting February 25th, there are thirty-five students enrolled from Kindergarten through 7th grade.
Although there are limited seats available, the class is growing. It is working on expanding courses for older students, all while creating an environment where students can practice English without judgment and be more confident with their new language.
Apoyo en el idioma inglés después de clases
En el Distrito Escolar de Wahluke, el 51.7% de nuestra población estudiantil se consideran Estudiantes que estan aprendiendo el Idioma Inglés. El inglés es un idioma muy complejo, y para muchos de nuestros estudiantes, el inglés no es su idioma principal. Para otros, este es el primer año que aprenden este nuevo idioma.
A través del programa bilingüe y con la ayuda de Rachelle López y María González, paraprofesionales de la escuela primaria de Mattawa y Julio Maldonado, el Defensor EL del distrito para estudiantes de Kindergarten a 6to grado, nuestros estudiantes emergentes y recién llegados pueden asistir a una clase después de la escuela para obtener apoyo adicional en inglés.
El apoyo del idioma inglés después de la clase es un entorno en el que los estudiantes emergentes y recién llegados se sienten seguros y cómodos practicando vocabulario nuevo y trabajando en su pronunciación, además de recibir apoyo con cualquier tarea que puedan tener. Hay diferentes actividades que los estudiantes pueden hacer, como tarjetas con palabras visuales y preguntas y práctica de conversación con sus compañeros y educadores.
Además de estas actividades, los educadores han ayudado a estos estudiantes a obtener herramientas que pueden usar fuera del aula con la ayuda de la Biblioteca Pública de Mattawa. Con una tarjeta de la biblioteca, los estudiantes pueden sacar libros para ampliar su vocabulario y usar los recursos en línea que ofrece la biblioteca pública, como Rosetta Stone.
“Los padres aceptan las lecciones y son solidarios; los estudiantes también disfrutan y están felices de estar allí. Todos se llevan bien entre sí y se sienten más cómodos aprendiendo un nuevo idioma ”, dice Maldonado. Mencionó que se ve mucho a sí mismo en los estudiantes, ya que una vez estuvo en sus zapatos.
La primera sesión de la clase de apoyo en inglés o "las clases de inglés", como dice Maldonado, fue en enero de 2020. Treinta estudiantes asistieron a la primera sesión, la segunda sesión a partir del 25 de febrero, hay treinta y cinco estudiantes matriculados desde jardín de infantes hasta séptimo grado.
Aunque hay asientos limitados disponibles, la clase está creciendo. Está trabajando en la expansión de cursos para estudiantes mayores, todo mientras crea un ambiente donde los estudiantes pueden practicar inglés sin juicio y tener más confianza con su nuevo idioma.
